Unforgettable Experience: Roaming the Streets of Rome

On January 8, 2023, I courageously embarked on an unforgettable experience, leaving the comfort of my home country for a semester abroad in the enchanting city of Rome, Italy. This experience was nothing short of amazing, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone fortunate enough to seize such an opportunity.

Throughout my time in Italy, I had the privilege of connecting with incredible people, savoring delicious new cuisines, and being part of a different culture vastly different from my own. This adventure not only broadened my horizons but provided me with a profound perspective on life.

Initially, adjusting to the new environment posed its challenges, but with the warm Italian sun, the sweetness of the wine, and the comfort of indulging in fresh pasta, I gradually felt a sense of belonging that made me feel right at home.

Classes

Italian 101

Firstly, I would like to share my amazing experience with my Intensive Italian Class, undoubtedly my most cherished course. It provided me with the incredible chance to traverse Italy and put into practice all the Italian I had diligently learned over my five-month stay in the country. We ventured into local shops, confidently ordered food, visited the largest university in Rome, engaged in conversations with students in Italian, and even explored farmer markets to practice our language skills. This class was truly a remarkable journey, surrounded by amazing classmates who, like me, were navigating the nuances of Italian. Despite our initial struggles, by the end, we all emerged with a deeper grasp of the language than when we first began.

Art History in Rome

This captivating class that immersed me in the world of Roman Art was filled with intriguing stories and insightful art lessons. Throughout the course, my professor devoted considerable time to accompany us on visits to the most breathtaking art pieces in Rome, offering detailed information about the artists, the historical background, and the meanings behind each artwork. This experience deepened my understanding of Roman Art, enabling me to appreciate the pieces more fully and engage in analytical conversations about them.

Art Piece: The Last Super

Is a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting represents the Last Supper of Jesus with his twelve Apostles.

Art Piece: Trevi Fountain

This fountain was designed by Nicole Salvi. According to legend, those who those a coin into the waters will return to Rome.

Art Piece: The David Statue

This is a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance sculpture, by Michelangelo. David was the first colossal marble statue made in the early modern period.

Politics of the Global Economy

This insightful class provided us with knowledge about the G7, which represents an informal gathering of seven major global economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union12. The annual meetings of the G7 serve as platforms to discuss various subjects such as global economic governance, international security, and energy policy. Exploring global issues and delving into how the G7 has addressed and resolved them made the class truly engaging and enlightening.

As part of our final project, we took part in the simulation of the G7 Leaders' Summit performing as the Heads of State and Prime Ministers and discussing the main global challenges related to women's rights and gender equality (I represented the UK).

Reflection

Embarking on a semester abroad was truly a cherished dream of mine, driven by a deep desire to immerse myself in diverse cultures and backgrounds. Having completed this milestone, I find myself blessed with a newfound perspective on life, one enriched by the captivating essence of Italy. Exploring the country's rich culture has not only broadened my horizons but has also transformed me into a more enlightened global citizen. The ability to share stories of Italy's profound history, appreciate its exquisite art, and savor the delights of its amazing cuisine along with its people has created a special place in my heart that I will carry with me forever.
